As an alternative, macOS 11 and newer have Rosetta 2 technology to run Intel-based applications on ARM-based Macs. Applications that can run natively on both Intel and ARM chips are called "Universal Apps". To make optimal use of this hardware, software needs to be adapted to run natively on the ARM chip. Software that runs on macOS 11 Big Sur or newer, does not necessarily run on the new ARM-based Macs. On, they announced their first "Apple Silicon" computers with an ARM-based M1 chip running macOS 11 Big Sur.
